New Here? Welcome! If you're new to my blog welcome! If you have not done so already, check out my previous blog posts on my journey to opening at Etsy Shop. YOU ARE THE BEST ADVERTISER TO YOUR SMALL BUSINESSI read somewhere that it takes about three months before things pick up in a small business. Of course, that doesn't come without a lot of work put into it. Since my update last month things have picked up this month. There have been TONS of wins, TONS of opportunities, and TONS of memorable moments. As mentioned before, I've been putting a lot of work into marketing my business in person. To this day I still spend $0 on advertising and I likely will keep it that way until who knows when. As a small business owner, "you" are the greatest asset to your business, and "you" are the best person to be advertising your business. Examples of me sharing my business with people: - When I am out shopping and happen to pick up a conversation with a stranger, I mention my business - When I am giving things away for free (spring cleaning), I mention my business. - When I handed out my son's birthday party invitations to his friends at school, I added my business card to every invite. - I went and worked two in-person venues and shared about my business. - I've been slowly telling people I've worked with in the past about my business (and some current people I work with too). - I've gone and actively searched for marketing opportunities where I had an article written about my business from AYI Connection (https://www.ayiconnection.com/). You can read the article here. -- (MY FAVORITE MARKETING OPPORTUNITY THIS MONTH) I've also found a really sweet bakery (Always Yours Bakery) in Castro Valley to do a Father's Day Collaboration with (I feel so blessed by this - THANK YOU NATALIE :)) - BTW she has the BEST sweets in the Bay Area. Not too sweet, delicately delicious (especially her Macarons), and her bakery is photogenic in every way! We are currently doing a collaboration where I have a limited edition Father's Day Cards and stickers available in her shop to go along with her Father's Day Macarons (pre-orders coming soon - you won't want to miss out - trust me they are way cute and delicious)! LET'S LOOK AT THE DATA FOR MONTH 3 on ETSYSo as I mentioned in the past my only platform for selling my work is on Etsy. I have some custom in-person orders from a variety of friends, but other than that (and the previous in person venue events) - Etsy is the main source. So - as always - here is the data for Month 3 on Etsy (May 2023):
CELEBRATING THE WINSThis month (May 2023) I've had SO MANY small wins:
Doing custom work for my friends I also found a niche that became a HUGE hit in my shop. This really helped jump my sales and views into my shop! LESSONS LEARNEDThis past month has taught me a lot about my products.
I've also learned a lot about people:

Since my last blog Opening an Etsy Shop: Month 2, I've been constantly thinking about my "niche."
I started thinking about why I started Dumplings and Us and "how" it started with my first illustration of my "twin dumplings." Originally Dumplings and Us was about my kids and how I see them as unique individuals stuffed with a variety of love. However, as I continue to think about my products and why I'm creating them, I had to take a pause and ponder. I first thought about my target audience, who are they and what do they like? Well that was the most difficult question to answer because although my products are "cute", they do not relate to everyone. There is no such thing as "one product" fits everyone. So to figure out my target audience I thought of myself first as the consumer... I'm a woman in my 30's that loves food, loves giving and going the extra mile for gift giving and hosting parties. My passion is giving and hosting parties. Throughout my life I have always been the one to be "extra" when giving gifts or planning parties. When I'm out shopping for my friends or family I try to buy gifts that are intentional, meaningful, and memorable. Therefore, I can never just buy a "one item" gift. My gifts are usually a "bundle" of small gifts for ultimate excitement and fun. I absolutely love the reaction my friends and family give when they open their presents. I have a co-lead in my business (D.C. Zhang). Her birthday is around the same time as Christmas, and her gift from me is typically a big bundle of everything related to food, coffee, and writing, because I know that's some of the things that she loves. Not only is putting together a gift fun, it is also about making them personalized and special. We celebrated my husband's birthday this past April and I didn't want to buy him a cake from Safeway, I went and looked for something that was unique and special for him - so I found Pikachu designed french macarons - it was perfect. I started Dumplings and Us with "dumplings" as my first illustration. Why Dumplings? Dumplings can be wrapped up in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Dumplings can be stuffed with a wide variety of ingredients, all of which will taste delicious every single time. Dumplings and Us is a place where you can find memorable gifts for any occasion, and that is starting with the basics, greeting cards and note cards. Greeting cards for all occasions and seasons in life. The ability to pick a uniquely designed card from a small shop like mine and write an intentional note to pair it with the perfect gift for your friends and family members. Many of my products are food-designed, and that's because I love food! Food is the core of relationships - sweet, salty, and everything else - it brings people together for a variety of different reasons and seasons! Food is delicious and it brings joy and excitement. So here I hope you will find meaning from my shop - a reason to be more intentional with gift giving by pairing my cards with your gifts- no matter the season and reason. There is always a reason to party, always a reason to celebrate, and always an opportunity to give an intentional handwritten card or note to the recipient. Make giving gifts memorable, make them exciting, and pair them with anything and everything that brings excitement and fun. So as I continue to journey through this "business" of mine - you can see I'm going through a lot of learnings. I'm learning a lot specifically around:
I will continue to develop and learn more as a small business owner, and it's going to take time. It's important that I remain patient throughout this process and celebrate the small wins of opportunity I'm given (as there have been so many!) So if you've been following me from the start- you know that from where I started to where I am now it's definitely been a roller coaster of an experience, but that is OK. I'm here to talk about what I'm going through and hope it resonates with some people out there going through the same. I'm going to continue growing, continue learning and continue developing as a small business owner. :) Hi, New Here? Welcome! If you're new to my blog welcome! If you have not done so already, check out my previous blog posts on my journey to opening at Etsy Shop. The Reality of EtsyThere's a lot of content out there on social media that try to convince you that selling on Etsy is a multi-million dollar business. Well, I'm here to tell you that the reality of selling on Etsy is NOT a multi-million dollar business, and it is NOT a fast selling platform. I've been open on Etsy for two months now. I have about 55 listings and have made about $130 in profit. Now I am NOT by all means upset at these numbers, if anything I am extremely grateful, but I do believe the reality of selling on Etsy is slow and it takes time. I sell a variety of paper products, such as party decor, greeting cards, and notebooks. Each of my items are unique in their own way, and that is what I believe makes my products sell. As a consumer, if you are looking for something specific I believe you will find it. It may be on Etsy or may not be, but I do believe if you are selling truly unique items, it will be found and eventually sell. I also do believe that having diversity in the products allows me to get more exposure across different audiences. My Version of MarketingI have about 55 listings and $130 in profit. This all comes with $0 of paid advertisements and ONLY selling on one e-commerce platform (Etsy). I do not have any reason to expand beyond Etsy at this time. I'm still in "experimental" and "risks" phase where I'm testing out a ton of different products and designs and seeing what sells. Although the sales are slow, they do come, and it slowly gives me a good idea of what designs are a "keeper" and what are not. I am however spreading news about my business in a variety of different ways. I'm giving out a few free cards to random people here and there. When I visit a small business I tell them about my small business. I've been "spring cleaning" and giving a ton of things away for free - while attaching my business card to the products. I also have been posting almost daily on Instagram and Facebook with posts, stories, and reels. What is very interesting is that my view count for my reels is a lot higher on Facebook than it is on Instagram. (Not sure why) since Facebook is my secondary posts that originate from my Instagram - but I am not complaining! I also try to keep up with writing a blog that allow my products to be more identifiable across the search engine world. I also have been blessed with opportunities to sell in person at craft fairs (ones with low vendor fees) and I will also be able to get featured in a news article soon. My NicheOne really beneficial thing about Etsy is that it allows me to experiment. I must say that I'm still trying to figure out what my "niche" is. I love creating so many different things and I love designing, but I have not yet narrowed down a single topic. However, I think that is OK. Etsy is a great place to allow me to try out my designs in different formats to see what works and what doesn't. The statistics from the "view" counts help me see trends. One of my favorite things to do is to host people and plan parties. I think further down the line my Etsy shop will transform into more party related decor (because there is always a reason to party) :) - but for now it's going to continue to be a mix of different things. I only want to create party products if I'm actually doing it for my kids or my friends, but making party related things without a reason or event where I"m personally tied to it is too difficult for my brain :). What's Next?I recently just launched a new product - flat note cards. I always loved the idea of writing a quick note (like a post-card type note) with a super cute and trendy design. A one sided note card, where there is a design on one side and a personalized note on the other side. Perfect for gifts, friends, family, or really any and all occasions. I can see myself using these note cards at work (when I go back to work) - encouraging my team members in a variety of different ways with a personal note. I can also use these note cards as a hand-written "thank you" note to add to my sold products.
These note cards are SO versatile, that I believe with a trendy design and a personalized note - this can be SO functional! Get your set today --> https://www.etsy.com/shop/DumplingsandUs?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=1445902341§ion_id=42809258 Currently I have a variety of different designs listed for these flat note cards: Handmade Fun Coffee, Tea, and Boba Note Cards Set Strawberry and Taro Boba Tea with a detailed design of a leaf Coffee with a detailed design of a coffee bean (link to products here) Dim Sum with pot stickers, dumplings, egg tarts, pineapple bun, and tea (link to products here) Handmade Fun Mochi Donuts, Macarons, and Sushi Note Cards Set Mochi Donuts Sweet Macarons Sushi (link to products here) Succulent Plant (link to product here) If you're new to my blog welcome! If you have not done so already, check out my previous blog posts on my journey to opening at Etsy Shop. Taking Risks Is Part of the JourneySuccess does not come without taking risks. Opening an Etsy shop has been all about taking risks. I never thought my minimal design work would or could ever become anything. However, as I continue to venture through this journey with Etsy I am continuously blessed with opportunities that keep me going. (I've wanted to give up so many times - but I can't stop now). The last time I sat behind a table and sold something was in middle school at the Christmas fair. I sold my personal collection of Pokemon cards. Actually,I’ve always been really good at selling things. I was the top seller in my class for selling World’s Finest Chocolates year by year in middle school. Tomorrow, Dumplings and Us will be LIVE and IN PERSON! It is REALITY that I am actually selling my designs (and my sister’s designs) in person. I am nervous, excited, scared, and have so many emotions going through my mind right now - that it is SO HARD to contain. This week I’ve been staying up later than normal packing cards and making sketchbooks. One by one I cut, folded, and packaged each one with so much pride. I can’t believe I made what I made. Both grandparents are out of commission tomorrow as well. I am so grateful for my neighbor who will be taking my older son, my husband who will be taking at least two kids (i’ll baby carry one), and of course my co-lead (dearsaladdays) for being at the table with me. I would not be able to do this without any of these people. Blessings Are a Gift from GodWhen I was thinking about which cards and sketchbook designs to print I stumbled upon a Mom and Pop printing company down the street from my house. They mostly support businesses, but I took a chance and called them to ask if they would help me print my designs (because the FedEx near my house has terrible customer service- and that was my only option for on-demand printing). I found L&D Printing. They not only supported me in printing my cards and sketchbook covers on demand, the mom of the shop HAS TWINS - and her twins run the shop with her. This is NOT a coincidence, this is no doubt a blessing from God. They took so much care of me this week, I cannot express how grateful I am for them. I will be printing with them FOREVER!
Not only did I find this blessing of a printing company - I also picked up 2-3 additional custom orders for party decor to fulfill within the next month (oh boy here we go :)!). I reached my first $100 in revenue on Etsy (since opening February 27th) and delivered two custom orders. I also found an opportunity for my business to get featured in an article hosted by (https://www.ayiconnection.com). They are releasing the newsletter in May to feature “Mombosses.” There’s a lot of opportunities to promote small businesses popping up, they're just a little hard to find unless you’re intentionally looking. Keep promoting yourself in person to people you know or just anywhere. I’ve been trying to “spring clean” and I’ve been giving stuff away, and when I do I attach my business card to my Etsy shop. Keep advertising your business (not just online) but in person too and to everyone you come across. So to those of you who are just getting started with Etsy, and although the orders are slow, my advice is to not give up. Keep going and keep creating new products. It will eventually pay off!
Behind the ScenesTesting our various types of paper and designs for the look and feel was a frustrating process. I tried cardstock of various weights and specialty paper for the cover and inside. I tested out different methods to bind the sketchbooks with staples, stitching, and glue. Stitching was beautiful, but it was costly for materials and I did not have a sewing machine. Glue allowed me to add more pages inside the sketchbook, but it was messy and did not look clean. Staples became the perfect binding tool. It was efficient (and poky - ouch!), yet allowed the sketchbook to look seamless. It was perfect. I also tried various tools for cutting the paper, boy oh boy was this annoying. I tried using my mini guillotine, a rotary blade, another paper cutter, and a box cutter. After watching a few youtube videos I found the perfect tool (and technique) the enabled me to cut the paper for a smooth edge. A box cutter and a ruler. It was perfect. I also tried making my own paper (lined vs. graphed), but it also presented its own challenges when printing and cutting. It didn’t look right or come out the way I wanted it to from my printer at home. So blank paper it is and it was perfect. It took me about 6-8 drafts (ok maybe a little more than that) to perfect the design, but I finally got it. Throughout the sketchbook making process I was frustrated. I didn’t know if this was realistic to do. Making these sketchbooks, going through this process was VERY time consuming. With four kids I didn’t think it would be possible, and I almost gave up. However, with a prayer and a deep breath, putting the staples, the box cutter, the ruler, and the blank paper together worked and the sketchbook was perfect. I was relieved. If you're new to my blog welcome! If you have not done so already, check out my previous blog posts on my journey to opening at Etsy Shop. I did not major in design nor am I good at drawing with a pencil, but I did love painting. Design has always been part of my daily job and my skills refined over time. I created flyers, powerpoint templates, logos, and websites. Over the years, my designs got better. I designed every aspect of my wedding: the invitation, the table numbers, table names, seating chart, and the take home party favors. It saved me a TON of money doing everything by myself, but I also had a ton of fun doing it. When I was pregnant with my first son I bought a cricut machine. Wow, did it blow my mind. I experimented with different cutting images and vinyl projects. Here’s an example of a panda I created from scratch - cut and assembled myself for my baby shower. When I transitioned over to my second career in 2018 I started learning how to design using Adobe Illustrator and realized all I needed were shapes to design. It blew my mind and expedited my design work. The Twin Dumplings was an inspiration from my twin boys. While I was in the midst of planning a “100 day old” party for the twins, I found a lack of party decor and designs for twins. Twins must really not be all that popular. I ended up not throwing a party for the twins because I was discouraged by the lack of party ideas. However, this discouragement turned into an inspiration for me to launch my Etsy shop. It’s something I've wanted to do for years but never sat down to actually do it. I actually opened my shop back in 2018, added one listing, and never touched it again. Here I am in 2023 with about 30 listings and 16 sales in about one month. Wow. Never did I think this could actually become a reality. So as I continue to embark on this journey with “Etsy” and expand the idea of “twins.” My co-lead (dearsaladdays) kept saying “can you make egg tarts.” I said - “sure!” I started working on the egg tarts. When drawing, I can see the characters I want to design in my mind, but it takes me several rounds of drafts before I get to the final design. Drafts of the Twin Tarts over Several Iterations... After the many rounds of designs and back and forth with my co-lead (Dearsaladdays) and my sister, we finally landed on a final design - which I now present to you all - the Twin (egg) Tarts. TWIN TARTS - PARTY INVITATIONSIn our early years together as a couple, my husband and I talked about what our family would look like. He always wanted five children and I wanted three. The plan was always to have more than just us.
My children are unique in their own way. Each a blessing from God, created and crafted by Him perfectly. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. Psalm 139: 13-16 Over the years as we started to build our family, first came one, then two, we lost number three, and finished with number four and five. I still remember my reaction when I saw the two little pods on the ultrasound - complete shock. I could not stop smiling and laughing. It took me a while to stop freaking out about having twins (hence my just because greeting card series), let alone on top of the two I already had. I was officially a mom with four kids under five years of age (crazy - yet I went ahead and started a business). When the twins were born my heart was overjoyed. I looked at the two, and although they were small and so fragile, they were mighty with loud cries (little yet mighty party invitations). While I was in the midst of planning a “100 day old” party for the twins, I found a lack of party decor and designs for twins. Twins must really not be all that popular. I ended up not throwing a party for the twins because I was discouraged by the lack of party ideas. However, this sparked a new interest for me in designing party invitations for twins. From this, I came up with the twin dumplings. I drew two dumplings and tried to match their faces according to how my twins smiled. I was so in love with the drawing I expanded the graphic to greeting cards (hence the twin dumplings greeting card series). Why dumplings? Dumplings can be wrapped up in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Dumplings can be stuffed with a wide variety of ingredients, all of which will taste delicious every single time. Children are like dumplings. As they grow older they are each filled with so much love from so many different people around them. They grow up each with their own unique personality. When I first developed the twin dumplings series I often thought about my other two children and how they would fit into this new business of mine. While I went through an exercise trying to develop a brand and name, my co-lead suggested Dumplings & Us. It was perfect. “Dumplings” would represent all of my children while the “us” is my husband and I. My business is focused on digital design downloads and greeting cards. Since I have four children, I’ll always have an opportunity to share my designs with the rest of the world. I’m always eager to make my own party decor for my kids, because I enjoy it and I know how to. Paired with my skills in making technology work for me, my digital designs represent me and the life that I live. My designs will represent various moments throughout my life. I truly love and enjoy getting crafty. My hope is that as you venture through my products you will find a relatable experience - full of joy, laughter, memories, and celebration. Life is like a roller coaster, but you’re never alone while riding through it. Hi, New Here? Welcome! If you're new to my blog welcome! If you have not done so already, check out my previous blog posts on my journey to opening at Etsy Shop. CHAOS It's been busy in my house - and it's caused a bit of disruption to my normal routine of working on designs and getting new products out. I had a water leak and after opening a piece of drywall in every area you can think of in my house to find the leak- turns out its coming from a cracked shower pan. What a mess! We've had to completely replace the shower pan which required demolishing the tile and redoing it. My house is a mess, my mind is going nuts, and I just can't wait for this to be over so I can clean, organize, and get things back to the way they were. Along with the chaos of construction my older kids have been sick all week so they have been alternating going to school as their symptoms improved. Boy oh boy I cannot wait for this week to be over! Especially the construction! DRIVING THE DATA - WEEK 4 / 1 Month It's officially 4 weeks / 1 Month into opening my Etsy shop - lets look at the data: There is something really special behind the numbers you see in the dashboard. Since I've opened my shop I've been able to reconnect with old friends (friends I haven't talked to in years). They reached out and wanted to support me by buying a card. While I would give my friends cards for free any day - they would not take it! THANK YOU to all those who have supported my shop. This Etsy journey has been such a blessing to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. NEW LOOK NEW BRAND These past 1.5 weeks have also been a moment to refocus and rebrand. I wanted to get some expert advice and I reached out to someone who I knew was a master at running a business on Etsy (learnwithpickles). She's been teaching me so much and she also is the one who made me go through this exhausting process of rebranding and renaming my shop, but I feel so accomplished with it. Thanks learnwithpickles for making me go through this! I am in love with the new name "Dumplings and Us" and I'm also in love with my new logo. Now that I've settled on my foundation - I've been focused on design work and getting new products out. I released the Just Because Greeting Card Series. You can read more about what "just because" means in my blog. (BTW: Each image below is a link to the card in my Etsy shop- GO SHOPPING!) WEDDINGS The season for weddings is approaching very shortly and I am honored to be working on some designs for a friend of mine. It has been so much fun that I decided to expand the designs into wedding greeting cards: Wedding Cake with Flowers (now available in my shop). As I continue working on wedding related designs - stay tuned as I'll be releasing some wedding digital downloads soon! All in all I am so grateful to how far this has progressed since I opened about nearly a month ago now. I've truly enjoyed making designs, packaging the cards and sending them off, and just reconnecting with so many people. I can't wait to see where else this will go.
Stay tuned. BTW - I'll likely be switching the cadence of "Opening an Etsy Shop" to monthly now. It will make it more worth while of a read! -K A couple of years ago my family and I went to visit our pastor and his wife (my mentor) back in our school town, Merced. During the time of the visit, I was a tired mother. My son was nearing two years old and my daughter was just shy of about 4 or 5 months (I can't remember).
My mentor and I went out to the home improvement store (without any kids - amazing) to look for flowers for her new backyard. During this time, I was venting about how I was so tired. I was tired from restless sleep, tired of being mom for everything and doing everything. I was tired of not having any "me" time or time to hang out with friends. She reminded me that this time with young children is temporary and it goes by very quickly. She reminded me to stay true to God's promises and blessings (children are truly a blessing). She reminded me to pray to Him when times are tough and to meditate in scripture. I'll always remember this moment when life as a mom gets tough. It was a joyful and restful moment, where I was able to break away from the kids, reconnect with my mentor after a very long time of not seeing her, being with someone understood my tiredness, and someone to remind me of how God carries us moms through these difficult seasons in life. So with this I release these Scripture Cards - Digital Download. Product Listing: www.etsy.com/listing/1425340378/bible-verse-cards-customize-and-print-at?ref=listings_manager_grid This took me a couple of weeks to develop. I thought about it often. Drafted it over and over, but each draft wasn't right. Finally tonight, the pieces all started coming to me: the colors, the graphics, and the versus. These scripture cards are printable, you can customize the verses or keep them as is for meditating, giving to someone, or using as a bookmark in your bible. Pray and seek God and his kingdom first, always, and He will give you rest. There are 6 cards, each with a different color and hand drawn floral design. Card colors, design, and size are fixed (not editable). Font size, style, and verses are customizable. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Matthew 11: 28-30 (ESV) Dedicated to Diane Renteria, thanks for always bringing me back to scripture. When was the last time you received a hand written note from someone?
For me it was shortly after a phone call from a mentor of mine. I had just called her freaking out about having twins, but more so growing from a family of four to six. I will never forget the feeling after my phone call with her, peace. Shortly after I received a sweet handwritten card in the mail, with an encouraging message, just because. My heart was filled with joy. Throughout my time in college, whenever I struggled through various situations and chatted with my mentor about it, she would leave me a hand written note of encouragement shortly after. It was always such a blessing, yet marked a memory to keep forever. Sometimes our conversations would happen over various occasions, such as coffee, tea, lunch, ice cream, and many more events. They were events that occurred not because of any special occasion like a birthday for example, but they happened, just because. Over these past couple of years, we've been buried by the fears of the pandemic. We've struggled to reach back out and gather with friends and family. Let's not make Christmas or Birthdays a reason to get together, but let's get together, just because. Over coffee, lunch, a run, a hike, etc. Just because is not just a note, it is purposeful and intentional. It's meant to create deeper connections and stretch beyond the comfort that the pandemic has created for us. Just because has a deep meaning, starting from the chosen card to the personal handwritten message. So, when someone precious crosses your mind, don't just think about them, write to them and get with them,. Just because we can. And that “just because” is enough of a reason to reach out. Every. Single. Time. With this I release the "Just Because" Greeting Card Series. This series has 6 cards in it. I will release one card at a time over the next few days / weeks. The first card is Coffee, Just Because. When was the last time you had coffee? Was it yesterday before going to work? Was it by yourself? (most likely). Well, why don't you pick up one of these coffee, just because cards, reach out to a friend you haven't talked to in a while (or one you have talked to recently), and write them a note to have coffee with you, just because. Be intentional this year with those around you. Make memories. Get out from your pandemic comfort zone. Just because.
